Yes, the Flyers pulled off a miraculous comeback from coinciding 3-0 series and game 7 deficits, stunning the Bruins and their home fans to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals earlier this year. But while the Bruins may be looking at tonight's game as a way to exact some revenge and put last year's playoffs behind them, the Flyers have a more recent history to move beyond. Sure, it's nice to be the side that won that series and the Flyers will have that for the rest of their lives, but more important right now is that the Flyers are also coming off two shootout losses against teams they should have beaten in regulation. Sergei Bobrovsky is set to backstop the Flyers, likely opposite Tim Thomas. I fully admit I was among the voices begging that Thomas not be considered among the Flyers' goaltending targets this past off-season, citing that he was getting on in years, making a lot of money, and that he'd lost his job to Tuukka Rask. Shows how much I know about evaluating talent. Thomas has regained the form that earned him his extension, leading all NHL starters in both goals against average (1.56!!!) and save percentage (.951). I have no regrets at how things turned out for the Flyers, with the emergence of Bobrovsky being perhaps just as good a story at much less cost, but yeah. This is why I try not to tear my hair out and criticize NHL GMs too often. I certainly didn't see this coming from Thomas. After a solid 6-2-0 start in October, the Bruins have twice lost four out of five games in November and enter tonight's action coming off back-to-back losses to Carolina and Atlanta. Like the Flyers, their focus has probably been on what went wrong in those games more so than the ones against the Flyers in May. But... It's not like they can totally block that out, right? By now we know the cast of characters for Boston. Zdeno Chara runs their blue line, and he's at a healthy +12 through 22 games this season. While the Flyers have brought in a third pair of capable defensemen, Chara is still averaging more than 26 minutes of ice time a night. Marc Savard remains sidelined, and Milan Lucic leads the team in both goals (10) and points (19). Marc Recchi is still producing, and we know he likes to do it against his old team. Enrico and I will be down there tonight with the tickets I got as part of the "Spectrum Seats" package. I'll have to make sure I remember the wrenches and screwdrivers.
