Who's Winning the McNabb Trade? The McNabb-O-Meter Is Back

Flooded by requests from our readers and sponsors (if by flooded, you mean one person, and by sponsors, you mean Enrico), the McNabb-O-Meter returns for its second season with The700Level. We weren't really sure what the hell we were supposed to do with this thing though. Its original use was to gauge whether the Eagles' franchise quarterback would be rewarded with a new contract and likely play out the remainder of his prime for the Birds, or be shipped away to serve time in a great football city such as Buffalo or Oakland. Well we made some modifications to the code, slapped a couple new stickers on the side, and the McNabb-O-Meter 2011 is back in business. Only now, its purpose is to indicate who is getting the better end of the deal that sent its namesake to Washington. And we're getting a reading... Just three weeks into the NFL season, the Eagles already clearly have gained the upper-hand on the trade. While Donovan has been playing well for the Redskins, they've proven it's going to take some time before a quarterback can make a real difference behind that offensive line and with their disparity of weapons. Also, the Skins still haven't been able (attempted?) to reach a contract extension with McNabb, meaning while it's unlikely they would let him walk away for nothing, their quarterback could still potentially become an unrestricted free agent at season's end. Meanwhile, the scenario hasn't unfolded exactly how we thought it might at home, but the Eagles aren't experiencing any major issues under center. Michael Vick has taken over and played better than almost anybody could have imagined. He's currently the second highest rated passer in the NFL, and his ability to run with the football has added an exciting element to the offense. Things didn't exactly work out with Kevin Kolb during his 15 snaps of fame, but he's had a good attitude about the demotion. Even if McNabb is still the better quarterback of the three, the Eagles continue to have plenty of flexibility at the position even after dealing him. What really sways the trade so much in the Eagles' favor in such a short period of time is the fast start of Nate Allen, the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Month. He's already banged out two interceptions and a sack, and has been an immediate upgrade over the trio of bodies the team stuck back there last season. The Eagles will also still receive a conditional third- or fourth-round pick in this April's draft, which of course sweetens the pot.Overall, the Eagles are 2-1, riding a wave of stellar quarterback play, and unexpectedly sitting atop the NFC East. The Redskins are 1-2, and if they lose on Sunday, are in danger of falling out of the playoff race before it even begins with contests against Green Bay, Indianapolis, and Chicago on the slate next. For the moment, the McNabb-O-Meter approves, but we'll continue to monitor its progress.
